When the .NET generic top-level extension was initially set up in 1985, together with the first domain name extensions on the web, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Because there were no particular regulations about the usage of the TLD, though, dot NET domains were taken and used for various purposes and by scores of people. This domain extension represents an ideal substitution for .COM, especially if the necessary domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
